Ex-Oregon star set to be first player to collect on injury insurance

Former Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is poised to become the first athlete to successfully collect on a loss-of-value insurance policy after a draft-altering injury. Once a projected first-round NFL draft pick in 2014, Ekpre-Olomu tore his ACL late in the season and subsequently dropped to the seventh round in the 2015 draft, where he was picked 241st overall by the Cleveland Browns. The insurance policy, reportedly valued at $3 million, was designed to protect against exactly this scenario—financial loss due to a significant fall in draft position caused by injury.

Keith Lerner, head of Total Planning Sports Services and the policy’s underwriter, confirmed that the claim is nearing payout and is expected to be processed within 30 to 60 days. Although Ekpre-Olomu is expected to miss his rookie NFL season while recovering, Lerner remains optimistic about the player’s long-term potential. This milestone highlights both the growing relevance of loss-of-value insurance in college athletics and Lerner’s central role in shaping this evolving landscape.
